"My work, without directly approaching the subject matter of the earthquake, does in a way deal with the idea of how destruction and a loss of what is familiar can develop into a need to fabricate a feeling of normal life carrying on. I see this idea reflected in my recent paintings by a return to my home landscape of the plains, shelterbelts and skies. The fire in the work is the new element that is based on the controlled burnoffs that the farmers set alight on the plains, this is a necessary destruction that in time leads to regeneration of the landscape. The fire also could be seen as a potential threat to the landscape and the familiar environment of my upbringing."
